Khairy dubs Anwar a ‘chameleon extraordinaire’
KUALA LUMPUR, July 1 — Umno Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin continued his attacks against Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim today, calling him a “chameleon extraordinaire” for apparently apologising for a recent Pakatan Rakyat (PR) anti-Zionist protest outside the US embassy here.
The Washington Post had carried an article on June 28 quoting Anwar as saying that he was “regretful” over his anti-Zionist attacks and that he “needed to be more careful” in the future, which was today picked up by Umno-controlled Utusan Malaysia in an article headlined “Anwar pergi ke Washington untuk pujuk tokoh Yahudi.” (Anwar goes to Washington to pacify Jewish leaders.)
“Anwar was in Washington for a few days... where he spoke to US House of Committees chairman Howard Berman and apologised for his attacks. Anwar needs to explain to the 10,000 Malaysians who followed him for the protest outside the US embassy 2-3 weeks ago and then go to Washington to apologise.
“This shows his duplicitious character,” said Khairy .
The Rembau MP read excerpts from the Washington Post article titled “Flirting with zealotry in Malaysia”, quoting Paul Wolfowitz as defending Anwar’s actions.
“
What he (Anwar) did was wrong, but as he’s fighting for his life, let’s cut him some slack,” said the article, quoting Wolfowitz.
The article also said that Anwar had met “a Jewish leader or two” to apologise.
“I don’t see anything wrong with opposing Zionist aggression. But Anwar is a chameleon extraordinaire. As opposition leader he has to explain why he did this,” said Khairy.
